A chandelier for your bathroom? Of course!

Yes, chandeliers can be large and elaborate, like the world’s largest Bohemian crystal chandelier located in Istanbul’s Dolmabahce Palace, but who ever said they could only be used in palaces or even foyers or dining rooms. A chandelier can be used anywhere you can think of, including a bathrooms or power rooms. Bathroom chandelier lighting is guaranteed to add extra sparkle (pun indented) to the smallest room of the house. A bathroom chandelier is perfect form meets function, providing light in one of the most stylish ways you can imagine.

The good news is there's a bathroom chandelier to meet every decorating style.

  • Cottage decor: Look for painted styles, especially in white or ivory with metal flowers and accents.
  • French country decor: A dark metal base with lots of arms and small fabric-covered shades
  • Spanish decor: Black wrought iron style in a candle style
  • Traditional decor: Lots of crystal (‘nuff said)
  • Rustic decor: Antlers, either real or plastic
  • Contemporary decor: Polished nickel finish and simple, elegant styling

A Bathroom Chandelier for General Illumination

Bathroom lighting design takes advantage of three different types of lighting:

  1. Task lighting: generally vanity lights above or surrounding a mirror.
  2. Accent lighting: used for mood or highlighting other design elements
  3. General illumination: intended for general or ambient lighting of an area

Bathroom chandelier lighting falls under the latter category.Keep in mind, that the total amount of illumination a chandelier can provide depends on the number of arms and lights it has. Most chandeliers take smaller candelabra-sized light bulbs. so in order to equal the illumination of a standard ceiling fixture, it might take multiple smaller bulbs. Take into account your needs when remodeling or upgrading your bathroom lighting fixtures and then do the math before you buy.

Think Small… Buy a Mini Chandelier

Large chandeliers are probably out of the question unless you have a high ceiling in your bathroom, but that doesn't mean your chandelier dreams for your bathroom are gone, too. Today's technology has come a long way and small chandeliers or mini chandeliers let you have your cake and eat it, too. There are even flush-mounted chandelier-style lighting fixtures available that let you have the look without the size.

Mini chandeliers can be used in a variety of ways:

  • Use two or more mini chandeliers on the ceiling
  • Hang small chandeliers on either side of the vanity mirror
  • Suspend over the bathtub for a romantic touch

The best feature of all for mini chandeliers is the cost. Less material -- and crystals -- make these small gems perfect bathroom chandelier options.

If there's not enough room for a full-sized chandelier in your bathroom, choose a small chandelier to fit the space
